A contractor or installer who only has to carry out the work does not need a Revit or BIM 360 subscription to see the model. Field-Viewer opens the IFC export alongside the pdf drawings, with layers on or off and a dimension you take yourself.
NO FLOOR LICENCE
In Belgium, Revit is mainly used by larger architecture practices and engineering consultancies, on projects where BIM coordination takes place between structure, services and architecture. On site itself, it is mostly the installers, electricians and contractors who deal with that model, without ever drawing in it themselves.
Field-Viewer is built for that group. The model comes in via an IFC export, optionally supplemented with pdf drawings pulled separately from Revit. Buying your own Revit or Autodesk subscription is not necessary for that.

The architect or engineering consultancy develops the project in Revit, with the coordination between structure, services and architecture that goes with it.
From Revit, the drawing office exports the model as an IFC file, the open exchange format that carries geometry and properties outside Revit.
That IFC file, optionally supplemented with pdf drawings, ends up in Field-Viewer. No Revit or BIM 360 account is needed to open it.
On tablet you view the model, turn layers on or off per discipline and take a dimension yourself, without installation.
IFC is a strong, open route, but not identical to what is possible on a Vertex BD project. That difference deserves an honest answer, not a sales pitch.
CONCRETE EXAMPLE
An electrician on a Revit-coordinated project wants to know whether his cable tray still fits alongside a recently shifted ventilation duct. Instead of waiting for a new pdf printout, he opens the latest published IFC version in Field-Viewer on tablet.
He switches on only the electrical layer and the structure layer, measures the clear space himself and knows within a minute whether the tray still fits. For a full clash check between all disciplines, the BIM coordination still sits with the engineering consultancy, but for this quick check he does not need to call anyone.
Not in the same way. IFC carries over the geometry and properties of your Revit model, but not the sheet-to-model link that Revit uses internally. Viewing, filtering layers and measuring all work as normal.
Yes. On the floor you do not need a Revit, BIM 360 or ACC licence. Field-Viewer opens the IFC export that the drawing office publishes or shares, beyond that you need nothing from Autodesk.
Then a new IFC export and publication is needed. Field-Viewer does not synchronise automatically with an active Revit model, so you work with the latest published version, not with whatever is currently open in Revit.
Yes. You open, for example, the structure and the services as separate IFC files side by side in Field-Viewer and switch layers on or off per file. That does not replace fully-fledged coordination software such as Navisworks or Solibri, but for a quick comparison on the floor it is enough.
