Rafters, trusses and roof penetrations? View the 3D model right on the roof.

Down on site the drawing would end up blowing about, and up on the roof it was not much use anyway. Field-Viewer takes the roof structure onto the tablet with you: rafters, trusses and the position of every rooflight or roof penetration, even without signal on the scaffold.

Measuring rafters and trusses, up on the roof

A roof structure looks simple on a cross-section drawing, but up on the roof itself that same cross-section is hard to unfold, especially with the wind picking up. Field-Viewer shows the rafters, trusses and purlins in 3D, at the angle you actually meet them.

If you are unsure about a connection at a hip rafter or a dormer, you rotate the model on the spot to the right angle and read off the dimension. There is no need for a cross-section any more to see exactly how two rafters connect.

Finding penetrations and rooflights straight away

A rooflight or a ventilation duct has to fall exactly between the right rafters, not on top of one. On a paper drawing that is a matter of careful measuring and hoping the structure underneath has not changed in the meantime.

In Field-Viewer you see the penetration and the timber frame structure beneath it in the same model. If the position no longer matches, you see that before you cut the hole, not after.

The model, up on the scaffold

The model goes up the ladder with you, on the same tablet you work with below. Up on the roof you zoom in on the connection you are working on, without first having to climb back down for a clearer view.

If you are unsure about the roof pitch or a ridge dimension, you read it straight off the model instead of calculating from a scaled cross-section.

Offline on the roof, even without signal

Not every roof lies within good signal: an old hamlet, a busy business park with thick walls, or simply a weak antenna nearby. Field-Viewer just keeps working even then.

Before you go up the ladder

The model and the latest published version are already on the tablet, so you are not left waiting on a download once you are up there.

Up on the roof

Without a connection you keep viewing the model, take a missing dimension and note down a comment. None of that gets lost.

Back down

As soon as you have signal again, everything syncs automatically to the drawing office. You do not have to do anything yourself.

Frequently asked questions about roofing

Do I need a 3D model from the architect to work with this?

Not necessarily from the architect themselves. As long as there is a 3D model, from the architect, the contractor or your own drawing office, in Vertex BD, Revit, ArchiCAD or as an IFC file, you simply open it in Field-Viewer.

Does it work with IFC files?

Yes. Field-Viewer works as a full IFC viewer, so a roof structure drawn in another package is just as easy to view on tablet.

What about rain or work gloves on the roof?

The controls are built around large, high-contrast buttons you can hit with work gloves on, and the screen stays readable in bright light on a sloping roof plane. Choose a rugged tablet in a protective case and it will also survive a rain shower or a light fall.
