The pdf at the workbench: why it never has everything on it
In short
- A printed sheet at the workbench never has every dimension on it, because the draughtsman deliberately chose what needed to be shown.

At the workbench lies a printout, half unfolded because otherwise it will not fit next to the machine. Someone is looking for the dimension from a service opening to the corner of the panel. They find the outline, they find a few dimension lines nearby, but not that one dimension. Work does not stop straight away, there is still something else to do, but that one piece waits.
Then comes the trade-off made on every shop floor at some point. Calling the drawing office costs time, for you and for whoever picks up. Guessing, adding and subtracting from two other dimensions, costs nothing at the moment and maybe everything afterwards, if the panel has already been cut and the dimension turns out to be wrong.
That is not because the draughtsman forgot something. The sheet does what a sheet is meant to do: it shows what was needed to make that one part, at the moment it was drawn. The question that comes up now at the workbench may not have existed yet.
A drawing is a selection
The model or the design the drawing office works with contains everything: every wall, every service opening, every connection, down to the detail. A sheet shows a part of that, chosen to make precisely that one thing legible. The draughtsman chooses the view, the section, the layer that stays visible, and leaves out what would distract. A drawing with everything on it at once, every service line, every fixing and every finish stacked on top of each other, is unreadable.
Leaving things out is not a shortcoming. A draughtsman who tries to cram everything onto one sheet does not make the document more complete, only unusable. Choosing what stays off the sheet is part of the job.
Scale and frame also decide what you see
A sheet also has limits you do not see straight away, but that do decide what fits on it. At a small scale, lines close together merge, and what were still two separate edges on the draughtsman’s screen becomes one thick line on paper. Detail that is genuinely in the model is no longer drawn at that size, because otherwise it becomes unreadable.
The sheet’s frame also cuts off whatever falls just outside it, sometimes exactly the connection you are working on. A drawing on A3 instead of A1, or a printout smaller than it was drawn for, makes text and dimension lines harder to read. Zooming in on a pdf does not solve that: you enlarge the pixels already there, you do not add information that was never in it. Measuring a dimension off a printout with a rule is almost never accurate, because once a drawing is printed at a size other than the scale of 1:50 or 1:100 it was drawn at, that scale no longer holds.
Dimensioning is a choice, not a complete list
A sheet carries dimensions, but not every dimension you might ever want to know. The draughtsman dimensions what is needed to make the piece, usually starting from a fixed reference such as an axis, a shell edge or a connection point. That is a deliberate choice, built around how the piece is made and installed.
The dimension you are looking for at that moment, for example from that service opening to the corner of the panel, simply was not on the draughtsman’s mind when they put the sheet together. It did not need to be there either, because from the logic of the piece it was not required. You can work it out yourself by adding or subtracting two other dimensions, but that is exactly the moment where a mistake creeps in.
The detour by phone
What usually happens next is familiar to anyone who has stood at a workbench or a saw station. Someone calls the drawing office. On the other end, someone has to open the right file, find the point on screen again, and read off the dimension. Meanwhile the station stands idle, or someone carries on anyway based on a guess.
The answer itself comes verbally. It is not written down anywhere, except perhaps in pencil in the margin of that one sheet. The next team working on the same piece with the same question does not find that pencilled number, or finds it but doubts it still holds, and simply calls again. A phone call like that costs time twice over: for whoever calls and waits, and for whoever interrupts their own work for a question that might come back tomorrow.
What changes when the model itself sits at the workstation
That same model the drawing office works in can also sit at the workstation itself, next to the sheet or in place of it. Nothing more is drawn than before, but you reach more of what is already there without having to get hold of someone else first. You ask for the distance between two points yourself, even where no dimension line is shown. You switch a layer on or off to see what is under the finishes or behind the cladding, something a single sheet can never show at once. You tap an element and its drawing appears next to it, so you no longer flip through a stack looking for the right sheet.

What a measured dimension does and does not tell you
A model at the workstation does not solve everything. A dimension you measure in it remains the dimension as it was drawn, not necessarily as it was finally built. On the shop floor there is always some play between drawing and execution, and for a connection with little margin, the tape measure on the spot still has the last word.
A measured distance is also not the same as a dimensioned line on a drawing. The draughtsman placed that dimension line deliberately from a reference at the time, with an intention the model itself does not carry along. What the draughtsman never entered, you can never call up either, however extensive the screen otherwise is. And paper stays useful for marking something with a pencil or taking along to a place without a screen, only that piece of paper does not itself know that a newer version has since appeared.
