Which tablet for drawings on site: what to look for

In short

Someone has to choose a device for the team, and that question comes up at the worst moment: one has just broken, or a new man joins without a device. The buyer searches a shopping site, sees ten tablets with specifications that say little about a roof or a shed, and chooses on price or on what is in stock that week.

That sometimes works out, and sometimes within the year there is a screen nobody can read outside any more, or a device that feels damp inside after the first rain shower. The problem rarely lies with the brand, but with what was never tested before the purchase.

Below are the points to look at for a device that has to show drawings on a site. Without brands and without model names, but with the properties that decide whether a device lasts or disappears into a drawer after six months.

Readability in bright light

A screen that looks fine in an office can wash out outside. Bright daylight on an open roof plane, or low sun as backlight, is a different test than an office under artificial light. A glossy screen reflects the sky, so you mostly see yourself and the clouds instead of the drawing. A matte finish or an anti-reflective coating helps, and contrast matters more than how pure the colours look: a line has to stand out against the background.

Also watch out for automatic brightness: it adjusts on a sensor that sometimes sits wrong or reacts slowly to the move from a shaded hall to outside, and the screen then turns out too dark or too bright at the wrong moment. High brightness also drains the battery. So test outside, on a clear day, before ordering ten, not in a showroom under artificial light.

Controls with gloves and wet fingers

Most screens respond to skin, not to leather, fabric or a thick work glove. Anyone who wants to scroll or zoom with gloves on often taps at nothing. Some devices have a setting that makes the screen more sensitive, but then raindrops register as false taps and the drawing jumps to another spot. A stylus that works with a glove solves part of that, though that too is something to try rather than trust on the box. Wiping a wet screen on your trousers does not always help, especially when the fabric itself is also damp.

Part of those controls, incidentally, sits not in the device but in the software. How big the buttons are and how much space there is around a tap zone weighs more than the last bit of screen sensitivity on the box. What that means in practice is on the page about the viewer.

Dust, water and a drop

Devices for outdoor use often carry an IP rating, two digits for how well a housing is protected: the first for dust and solid particles, the second for water. What that rating covers differs by manufacturer, so ask specifically instead of trusting the label. “Splash resistant” differs from surviving full immersion, and the drop tests a manufacturer refers to say nothing about a drop onto gravel or concrete.

There is a real difference between a device sold as rugged and an ordinary device in a sturdy case: the second is cheaper and easier to replace, the first often has a reinforced edge or a sealed charging port. The weak points sit in the same places every time: the charging port and the corners at the front. A screen protector helps against scratches from sawdust and stone dust, and not only outside: a hall full of sawdust is just as demanding on a screen as a rain shower on a roof. That is also what a device has to endure on site, rarely one hard moment but an accumulation of small ones.

Battery and charging

A device that lasts a full working day has to do that with the screen at a brightness readable outside, not only at a dimmed indoor setting. Cold air in winter takes capacity away from that, so what comfortably lasts on a summer day turns out tighter on a freezing morning. Some devices have a swappable battery, so a team can slot in a full one, but that is not standard.

Anyone without a swappable battery arranges charging differently: a car charger or a power bank in the van, so a device tops up between two sites. Just as important is the agreement: who charges the device in the evening, and where that charger hangs so it does not go missing among the other kit. A device with a flat battery by eight o’clock is worth as much to the team as no device.

Screen size against portability

Reading a drawing is easier on a large screen, climbing a ladder is easier with a small device on your belt. Those two wishes pull against each other; the choice depends on where the device is used. A fixed screen at a workstation, on a stand or a magnetic mount, can happily be large: nobody has to carry it. A device that goes up the scaffold with you has to stay small and light enough to hold with one hand while the other holds a railing.

Weight counts including the protective case, which often adds weight of its own. A case with a hand strap or shoulder strap makes a larger device easier to carry. Another approach is one large screen for the team at the workstation, alongside smaller devices per person for on the move.

Working offline and management

On a site, signal is not a given, so check whether what the team needs also works without a connection, and whether the model is already on the device before someone leaves. Downloading on the spot does not work without a signal. Large models also need enough storage, something easily overlooked with an entry-level device.

For the connection there is a choice between wifi, a built-in SIM card or tethering through a phone: wifi suits a fixed workstation, a SIM card suits a device that has to work everywhere without depending on who is nearby. Also think about longer-term management: who takes care of updates and screen locking, what happens when someone leaves the company or a device goes missing, and whether a device is tied to one person or to the team.
